What was the best market in 2019? HTML5 or Mobile? — Gideros Forum

What was the best market in 2019? HTML5 or Mobile?

I posted the same question in a site whose target is HTML5 (because many use cordova to publish to iOS and Android too)

So I'm wondering if you would matter to discuss the following:

For you guys that release games for both HTML5 games for playing directly in browser (both desktop and mobile ), in Facebook Instant Games and mobile games (Android / iOS), which one was the better for you?

When I say better I mean:
  • which one generated more gross revenue ?
  • which one generated more net revenue ?
  • which one was easier to spread your game?
which one generated more gross revenue ?

what's your source of revenue? Ads, in-app purchase, exclusive / no-exclusive licenses, others (please cite them) or a mix of them?

Also, I'd like to know:

For HTML5 games for playing in browser:
- what got you more revenue? Either desktop or mobile users?
- How many percent of users were in desktop and how many in mobile browsers?

For mobile games:
- what platform got you more revenue? Either Android or iOS?
- which platform gave you more downloads? Either Android or iOS?
- Are you able to live just by making games?

Thank you all.

Notes:

There is no need to disclosure your app names nor the exactly amounts.

I'm considering Facebook Instant Games as a separeted category from HTML5 games to play in browser due the fact one must have its game approved by both Apple and Google and because it will run inside Facebook's site / app.

I don't care whether the Android / iOS games where made using native code or tools like cordova. What matter is that your game was published on Apple Store and Play Store.

  • I only have some ads on my android apps and all in all I don't have enough yet to buy my a bar of chocolate. I am doing all this for the fun of programing and maybe some day I'll be rich?
I believe to sell your app or in-app purchase you need a license from your tax country? I don't have my own company yet. This was my 2 cents :)

No license is required when you withdraw your funds, you are asked to enter your tax ID if you are a US citizen or if your country has a contract with the US.
If there is no treaty between your country and the US,You will be automatically charged standard tax

  • Yes, you can ring the US IRS and request an EIN and enter that on the W8BEN. There are loads of guides on the internet on how to get an EIN and how to fill in the W8BEN.

  • @MoKaLux is not living from his games yet. What about you guys? Are you?

Have any of you tried HTML5 marketing?
  • My income is almost entirely from the mobile apps, and almost entirely from in-app purchases. I've used ads in games, but I've done better with ad-free apps. I haven't made any serious attempt to monetize HTML5 games, but I've been giving it some thought. I can go on at great length (I've been known to) about the challenges of the app store markets, but overall they're still working for. I have more users on Google Play, but earn more per user on iOS so they balance out. I make a little from the Amazon App Store and Microsoft Store.

I've never tried to monetize web content. I'll be interested to hear from anyone who makes significant income from HTML5 games. Once you have a game finished, it never hurts to find new ways to distribute and monetize it.

  • Big publishers (like Voodoo, Ketchapp, etc.) prefer to NOT work with Facebook Instant Games for various reasons.

But for small developers it may be a good platform, less competition.
(that's what I heard, but I've no idea if it's true, never published anything there)

Facebook Instants would be the best platform if/when Facebook fix the platform, currently, it appears broken. This is not the fault of Gideros (which works perfectly on the platform btw). Even with that though it is the best platform to test new things on fora couple of reasons:

    1) Your updates are pushed out immediately, you know everyone playing is using the latest version.
    2) Even with its faults you still seem to get more players than other stores.

The problem is that FBs are mostly games for kids, so there is no income from FB apps.

  • Not really, there are lots of different games - they also need to have a facebook account so they generally are teens or above. You can run fb ads and/or use iap to make money.

They are introducing AR soon, so that should be interesting...

@SinisterSoft What you mean when you say it appears broken? What are the problems with FB?

It's not working how I think they want it to (the AI system to spot things, help you promote your game with boost doesn't appear to work properly and also says some games are misusing ads when they are not), they are fixing things but the whole thing appears to be a work in progress. None of this is to do with Gideros, that bit works fine. When it does finally work (when facebook fix their stuff) I'm confident it will be the best platform.
