It's Monday already

The weekend was quite good, I got some time out of my other apps and projects to play with Gideros, and coming to it after a while helped, I had some ideas on how to get things done and I got to try them out, the results were amazing, I got a lot many thing done. I converted some of my controls to work with Gideros, which actually was an exercise in Portability. Which also helped me to understand some of the inner intricacies of how Gideros works or how it could be used.

I do not intend to make millions by selling these controls, nor do I expect a gold rush, a line of buyers flooding my inbox with requests to buy these controls. These were as I said the results/by-products of my journey, now that the weekend is over, it will be back to the other stuff that I was working on.

just my thoughts on how I spend the weekend with Gideros --> totally productively ;)

  • Nice to see guys like you OZ helping everyone!

When you say converted do you mean from Corona? I'm interested to see how much work there is in changing my existing corona code, not had chance to have a proper play as yet.
  • Hi Gary,
I had made this control about a year ago for the C*SDK ( link : http://iphone.oz-apps.com/a-custom-bar-graph-in-coronasdk ), yes and I have ported it over for Gideros, it now needs fewer lines of code and it is a bit faster.

Expecting that the code will work as is would be a bit too much to expect, however if you have read that I am working on a compatibility layer that allows for developers to migrate over without much of a hiccup using that library. This is however a bit more delayed as other projects take over priority (unless I get a kickstarter like backing that makes this the priority :) )

I would just say that Gideros is very similar to ActionScript (something that I did not use - Ever) but because it is Lua based, you can write wrappers to make things easier.

Lastly, OZ stands for Australia as in the Land of OZ, the land down under... that's not my name :)

  • Ha @OZapps, sorry yes I guessed you were in Oz but didnt see your name anywhere ;)

I'm in the (perpetually cold and wet) UK. Agreed I wouldnt expect to open corona code and run and compile but things like event handler names look pretty close. ;)

Yes I've never used actionscript either, bizarrely I had never even heard of Lua 18 months ago until I started using corona and I've been coding since 1981 using a zx81 and going through BASIC, 6800 assembler, C, clipper, foxpro and Delphi.

I'll keep an eye on what you have coming happy to pay for someone's efforts.

    Cheers

    Gary
  • Cheers Garry, Did you see the other off topic thread? It was about retro devices, I am a Speccy Fan myself, many years spend in reverse engineering the machine code and loading code into the memory and not allowing it to run, then having a peek at how it worked.

I had also never heard of Lua as a development platform, and my path was similar, ZX Basic, Z80, 8085/8086, dBase, Clipper, C, FoxPro, Visual FoxPro, Visual Basic, Delphi, Visual C++, VB5/6, VBA, eVB, eVC++... However I recollect an fellow Academic at the University mention using lua for their paper and proof of concept, and therefore I never gave Lua much thought, it was the language for Researchers. I came into Academia from the Enterprise, so my look out was more commercial than research and open source based.

I hope that I do not make everyone wait a bit too long. I will post a few articles on and off on the progress, have to also make sure that it does not interfere with the Ansca copyrights.

  • Ah yes the good old days! I loved the innovation back then everything new and exciting!

You might not have seen this as I'm not sure what the BBC show outside of the UK, this was on BBC4 and was awesome; the link to the full 85 min drama is here:

It shows the history of sinclair and their battle with Acorn to build a machine for the BBC. Great entertainment and a superb alexander armstrong as sir clive.

    Enjoy!

P.S. You keep posting useful stuff and I'll upload a decent quality copy if you like it
