@ar2rsawseen: I have an HTC Desire and could not upgrade to 2.3 or higher. Then I used that HTC update a few months ago. While it looks like things work fine, I noticed that my phone now hangs quite often and needs a hard reset then. Usually when I use the camera or live backgrounds. Are your colleges have the same problems after the update?
@MikeHart@ar2rsawseen I've just bought a used HTC Desire from ebay. It came running 4.04 which it managed but was a bit slow moving between apps and also left little space for apps as the OS was quite large. I've now got it running on 2.3.7 using an MIUI rom which was the first custom rom I downloaded that I got working properly on it. It's a bit of an unconventional rom in that its interface is more iphone like than android, but so far it seems to be running fine and very smoothly. I haven't experienced any problems yet but it's only been on there a couple of days so time will tell.
Need the low latency sound badly on Android after trying Perfect Piano on the same device as DrumHead (a test app written in GiderOS) ...both on Google Play. Don't know what Perfect Piano is written with but it works great and has great low latency! Currently as is, GiderOS is really great for games but not much use for music based apps on any Android device from 2.2 to 4.2

Yes, with the move to the newer opengl, this seems like the next logical step. OpenSL ES also add more things like effects, etc...
Big benefits though are: " lower latency audio, for smaller binary size, for easy debugging and to get rid of Java dependency. "

Try both and see on any Android device you like!
