Just another thought about enhancing draw speed...
When the monster is created you draw an entire black thing at it's current position. When the monster is not moving, do not draw any black thing. When a monster is moving just draw a thin black thing at the edge of the monsters position in the direction it is facing.
This does of course make the code more complex but if it runs faster then that's better all round

I'm making a Dig Dug/BoulderDash/Rockford style game - with a few other retro influences too. The touch control method is a hard thing to figure out though, testing something like the way Crossy Roads works, but will also add a vpad option for single player too.
