  The basic MP3 decoding and encoding technology is patent-free in the European Union, all patents having expired there. In the United States, the technology will be substantially patent-free on 31 December 2017 (see below). The majority of MP3 patents expired in the US between 2007 and 2015.

  I am not a lawyer, but I suppose that the 5000 copies mentioned in your link have to be distributed in the US and the few other places still enforcing that patent.

  Up till now, the MP3 patent owners have been clever enough not to harass individual users with demands for payment. They know that would stimulate popular awareness of (and eventually opposition to) the patents. Instead, they go after the makers of products that implement the MP3 format.

  However if I remember correctly @john26 was using OGG files in Longford, I wonder if it could be possible to "merge" this support in gideros too, to be on the safe side when some greedy lawyer would like to take your (our) hard earned nickels

  MP3 patents have completely expired if you are in Europe, and have mostly expired in the USA - completely by 2017.

  OGG btw will have the same bug as the .wav format in the current android player - I'm sure this is fixable though.
