But we need other "titles" as we all have various skills (maybe like a list of HATS )
Just because you have made lots of posts and are on the Top Posters list doesnt make anyone a Guru, some just post a lot of quick replies, and emoticons..
Others (like @Mells) as we know have deep and meaningful content, that if broken down into smaller posts would fill most of Google's cloud storage @ar2rsawseen is like our Yoda, who answers all our questions with technical wisdom. @atilim is like our Merlin, he hides in a dark room for days then appears with a sparkling and magical new toy to play with. Some are pros at Plugins, Apple Xcode, Android, Windows..etc
@artleeapps, I agree with you on that, by just posting smileys one can bump up the number of posts. And the title "Guru" is again left to the interpretation of the end user/individual.
I read it as follows, the people on the Top Posters are/were frequent members that read the forums and helped new comers to orient themselves with Gideros. Many on the list have unique individual skills and there are some that are not on the list because of noise that you mentioned. So these are frequent members and have contributed or are aware of Lua, Gideros and are an asset to the community. Having said that, new developers are welcome to pull their weight and help others.
To mention a few, @MikeHart was once very active and had released the first Plug-in for using native IOS elements with Caroline (who is not in the list). @GregBUG worked his magic with the AnimationLibrary and the ParticleLibrary which was a big help to developers here, he is now not a very active participant as he once was. @NDoss had some amazing code to do with physics and 2D he is not very active these days. @BowerAndy had some amazing classes and contribution to the community. So a new user on the forums would not have a deep understanding of how the community evolved and how the contributors helped shape this community and Gideros in the past couple of years. Many are now i the shadows or busy with other projects. I would still call them GURU, which means an expert.
do not get me wrong, I still agree that a squeaky wheel is not a guru <-- Here's my emoticon and noise.
... and I almost forgot, the Guru status grants the members something like a delegated admin status, where the "Guru" users can delete the spam messages rather than flag them to the admin. or Edit to help place code in the < > tags for syntax highlighting, etc.
@OZApps its a good thing the "Top Posters" are actually "Top" and in experienced/knowledgeable posters, not just by the post count.
Eg. im around 270 (comments/posts if i read that right.) Thats mainly due to me asking so many questions to the forum, not by providing answers and guru like responses.
"What if"..... (that quote usually ends bad..) you have a rank list by the number of "Accepted Answers" you clocked up for the answers you provide ... just a thought...
@ArtLeeApps, you have some very valid and good suggestions. I am sure that as the Gideros Team (mainly @ar2rsawseen) looking at implementing new features and functionalities, there will be a lot of things that could come and go in the coming period. I am sure that they can consider this as well.
Another point that I was mentioning is about active users on the forums, they can help as delegated admins allowing @ar2rsawseen to free up time on other things geared mainly towards the development side of things.
At the end of the day, the only reason why the Gideros Forums have become more than just a development based forum and turned into a community is the relaxed atmosphere where people discuss and talk any/everything. In fact you might know more about many of the users here than you would about your neighbour living next door.
Wow you guys, give people new stuff to play with, and there are always complaints FYI, not all Top Posters are Gurus and not all Gurus are Top Posters And there will also be other activities to fortify community, emphasize contributions and develop stronger infrastructure As well as giving others a chance to prove themselves
not all Top Posters are Gurus and not all Gurus are Top Posters
.. that sounds like the OLD "ER/EAR" entity relationship attribute diagrams (now im showing my age.) for database design.... Many to Many... etc... like "All Sales have a customer, but not all customers have a sale....
And there will also be other activities to fortify community, emphasize contributions and develop stronger infrastructure As well as giving others a chance to prove themselves
..Im thinking one of the challenges should be: 1) Write a 3 match style game 2) Have the word "Saga" and/or "Candy" somewhere in the title. 3) The first one to get Apple to approve and deploy it, wins :-\"
@AretLeeApps, @OZApps, I agree what both of you are saying about bumping posts to progress up the Top Posters list and confess that I have been guilty of that in the past as have a few other Top Posters but also the very same members have to some degree or other earned the Guru status by posting helpful / useful information on the forums.
I don't think there is one name on that Top Posters list who hasn't contributed a great deal to the community as a whole.
I myself have not been very active on these forums for a while as work & family commitments seem to get in the way also @techdojo hasn't been very active on here since he changed jobs last year but I'm still here in the background as I'm sure @techdojo is.
As for @ArtLeeApps challenges, I have completed #1 (with a twist), I could do #2 but I think #3 would then be the impossible task (
And just to add to previous conversation basically similar to what @Scouser and @OZApps says even if the member is not active anymore, lost interest in Gideros, or does not have time, etc. It does not matter, if what he did helped lots of people, it should not be forgotten
I guess I was saying that to @artleeapps and in quite detail
To mention a few, @MikeHart was once very active and had released the first Plug-in for using native IOS elements with @Caroline (who is not in the list). @GregBUG worked his magic with the AnimationLibrary and the ParticleLibrary which was a big help to developers here, he is now not a very active participant as he once was. @NDoss had some amazing code to do with physics and 2D he is not very active these days. @BowerAndy had some amazing classes and contribution to the community. imagine having a "collection" of medals beside your profile, like used in the army... (ok im turning the forum into a app !)
as you achieve, you receive: - adding a plug-in for use by the forum (a badge like a power plug) - answering "correctly" a newbies question (a Light globe) - Writing a book on Lua or GIderos (a badge like a bookworm) - Releasing a game to the markets (a badge like a news press) - getting over 10,000 downloads on a single game (a dollar sign)
(apart from the fact @ar2rsawseen would have to hack the forum code to bits to get it to work...lol)
@OZApps, I'm so sorry I overlooked that. Added your name also
@ArtLeeApps actually it could be quite close to that We have lots of ideas, for example provide simple rest api to your Gideros profile information (of course if you allow it), which would enable you to create web widgets with the apps you have added to Gideros website, tools you created etc. And it could be a way to manage also badges from the Gideros website and show them on the forum.
But unfortunately, this kind of fun things have low priority
But, low priority in this case does not mean it will take much time until the feature, it means that I don't need to be tired in my free time and should be willing to do that
@Scouser - actually I've not been around for a long time (sorry guys ) As mentioned I did change jobs about a year ago (in fact I changed again about 6 months ago - but that's a long story and not really relevant) - I'm currently teaching software development to apprentices working for a large multinational IT consultancy firm.
So I'm a guru now? That's interesting
Thanks to the Gideros staff / team for honouring me in that way - hmm must find more time to work on games now...
As an aside - @Scouser - I've really moved over to the dark side now as I treated myself over Christmas to a shiny new 27" iMac - Alex would be proud of me - AND....
I'M LOVING IT
WhiteTree Games - Home, home on the web, where the bits and bytes they do play! #MakeABetterGame! "Never give up, Never NEVER give up!" - Winston Churchill
You would only move to the Dark Side IF and ONLY IF you purchased the new Mac Pro (the little garbage can like cool server) otherwise, you are moving to the shiny bright Aluminum (white/grey) side.
Plus, you can run the other side OS too in VMFusion or Parallels or VirtualBox
everyone seems to be posting recommendations here, so i decided to tell you guys what really annoys me about this website: I don't hit the +1 button, because it says "User loves this." instead of "User likes this" is anyone else annoyed by this, or just me?
“ The first 90% of the code accounts for the first 90% of the development time. The remaining 10% of the code accounts for the other 90% of the development time. ” - Tom Cargill
@Harrison it does look a bit like a dating site "Loves: ArtLeeApps". if i had a vote id also say "Like" would be better. maybe have "+1" for Like and "++1" for Love

And Guru could also mean that you know much more then the rest of the forum members and your answers may be more precise than others
Also it means a great power, but with the great power, comes responsibility
And also it means you've done and achieved something, others did not
