Got Mavericks? Want Server for Free from Apple?

If you have an Apple Developer account (even if it is just the free one) then you can get a free redemption code from Apple for Mavericks Server (approximately $20 worth app from the app store). Apple really wants people to upgrade to their latest builds.

BTW, how many have upgraded to Mavericks, I upgraded my MacBookPro to Mavericks and found some interesting finds, while the Mavericks upgrade is free, the cost of upgrading to Mavericks is quite high. There are so many softwares that simply stop working with Mavericks and are a dead investment or require to upgrade which is once again, a rather high fee.

What are your experiences? Apart from Hackintoshes...

  • Hi @OZApps,

I've been gradually testing (iMac 2010 model) and haven't found anything that works on ML and not on Mavericks yet. CS6 works (AE needs an update), Crossover works, VMWare Fusion 5 works, BBEdit, Path Finder. (And a range of Mac App Store utilities). Haven't got around to trying Charles yet.

What are your tools that required a paid upgrade?

    Hi @OZApps,
What are your tools that required a paid upgrade?
Amongst the couple of apps that did not work some notable ones are CS4 Master Collection (It is not easy(cheap) upgrading Adobe Licenses in Australia), the little snitch that protects me from apps that dial home, Total Finder and some made redundant with Mavericks.

A couple more that I am still trying to check before I upgrade my iMac (running Lion) and it just stops or disables the development workflow and tools.

I upgraded the MB to see if there were any issues as that is not the main development machine.

Just wondering why both Parallels and VMWare indicate getting the latest versions to work with mavericks.

So looking for Notes from the field (so as to say) on the upgrade issues and incompatibilities.

Strange that CS4 MC doesn't work for you. CS6 does. Little Snitch does work for Mavericks, see here:

    http://blog.obdev.at/post/little-snitch-and-launchbar-are-ready-for-os-x-mavericks/

(I have a licence but I haven't tried it for myself yet on 10.9, as I don't often use it. I'll make sure I do next time I boot into Mavericks to test another bunch of tools.)

Total Finder does work with Mavericks according to their site (http://totalfinder.binaryage.com/mavericks) ... I use and highly recommend Path Finder. It's pricey but I got a couple of licences through some bundles a while back and it's extremely useful and powerful. Path Finder also handled the SMB2 transport fine with the Synology NAS - no issues that I've seen reported elsewhere. I hardly ever use the Finder.

If you're interested, here's an open source "total finder" thingy that I saw recently http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net - I haven't tried it though.

Of course Parallels and VMWare would be wanting you to upgrade. It's their annual boost to their Mac sales bottom line (-; Seriously, I read the VMWare upgrade description and it didn't describe any incompatibility, so before I spent any $$, I installed Fusion 5 and ran the VMs and they run without any issue. Problems may come later down the line with a 10.9.1 or something, but for now, I don't see a need to upgrade. My development VMs are mostly dev servers anyway, and Debian et.al. are humming along just fine on 10.9. (I did test WinXP and Win7 and both also worked with no issues.)

So far, with my occasional reboots in Mavericks to install and test stuff, I've been very happy to report that everything works as expected.

    @Ian,
that looks promising, maybe I need to continue testing and seeing what works ans what doesn’t.

Little Snitch 3 is a new version and was released to be compatible with Mavericks and is a Paid upgrade, I have been using it since 1.x and then upgraded to 2.x and unsure about spending on 3.x (though not much), same goes for VMFusion or Parallels, started off with Parallels (when it was I think 4.0, called Desktop for Mac) and had to upgrade twice, same with Screenflow or similar, $50 every upgrade is not cheap.

I guess there is a point like with Photoshop one could use an older version as long as it works unless one is after particular features. However when the software cannot run at all (even if it was an unsupported older version) then it is a bit of an issue.

I am not sure the way I use my computer overlaps with yours and if my comment would be useful to you but let's try :

I updated (upgraded?) from Lion to Mavericks and on my side everything works fine.
I don't use the Adobe Creative suite.
So far my experience has been really good. I have no idea why/how but my fan is more quiet (Pixelmator/Gideros Studio) and I get a little more of battery.
Here is a list of apps that (beside the most obvious ones) have been working well so far, you might use some of them?
    Taskpaper / Omnifocus / Fantastical / Due / Alfred / Found / Screenfloat / Divvy / Dropzone / Pathfinder / Forklift / Bartender / Sketchbook Pro6 / AirServer / Screenflow etc...

  • @OZApps My Little Snitch was 3.0 and I haven't updated it for a very long time until today. Not sure when 2.x was deprecated, but I've been running LS3.0 for at least a year, probably more. I only upgrade Screenflow recently when it was in a bundle, and I jumped a couple of versions - totally understand where you're coming from. I went from CS3 to CS6, and don't really see the point of upgrading to Creative Cloud.

More and more I'm going with Apple's pro software (Final Cut X & Motion) vs Premiere & After Effects. Apple's prices are far more reasonable and the big update prices generally get *lower*. Can't wait to get a paid project that's a good excuse to purchase Logic! (I used to be a composer and started on Logic 1.0 on an Atari ST in my 20s).

If only someone made a compelling replacement for Photoshop, Illustrator and Fireworks then I probably wouldn't need a creative suite again … (Pixelmator is a bit too low-powered for my PS/FW needs.)

It is what they jokingly were going to call Sea Lion, before they moved on from Cats (btw Sea Lion is not a cat, it is a seal, and not a Navy Seal or Marine, but an aquatic mamal)

  • Hi @OZApps - here's a further list of non-app store software I've tested this evening. Everything seems to work fine except for Audio Hijack Pro which has limited support at present (see their blog for more details).

    node.js
    git
    On the Job
    Little Snitch 3.2
    Charles Proxy
    SQLYog Enterprise running under CrossOver
    Cyberduck
    Filezilla client
    Printopia
    Spine
    Grand Perspective
    MPlayerX
    Moom
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    VueScan
    Find Any File
    Handbrake
    RipIt

Macports had some installation issues which has now been solved with a new installer.

I was very encouraged and think I'll probably make the migration to Mavericks next weekend when I have a spare day.

    Hope this helps,

    - Ian
  • Thanks @Ian and @Mells for that list. I guess most of the software that I would use on a regular basis would work fine with mavericks. The writing is on the wall, have to move up to Mavericks, sooner than later, but maybe in the new year...

One good reason to move to Mavericks -> xCode 5 -> iOS7 -> SpriteKit.

    "Mavericks -> xCode 5 -> iOS7 -> SpriteKit"

    You probably seen these already, but if not ... (-;

"Recently I was working on a project to provide Lua bindings to the new Sprite Kit API in the upcoming iOS 7. This allows a user to write entire Sprite Kit games by creating and calling Sprite Kit objects from Lua. The underlying technique makes heavy use of the Delegation design pattern..." from >>>

    and of course:

    - Ian
  • @Ian, KoboldKit yes, I have been following Steffen for a while even before Kobold framework started and am aware about it.

I had not seen James Norton's article and the idea was similar and maybe make it a plug-in for Gideros.

The biggest impediment at the moment is adding data, input data on a mobile device. The only way to have custom input screens is to draw everything personally while it would be so much easier if there were native elements.

There is the uikit.mm plugin - My personal preference for input UI is to just put up a webkit viewport and have all the UI in HTML5. Works fine for me on iOS.

yes, but it' s not cross-platform. I guess @ar2rsawseen is working on some native elements but it's just about timing...
