Port your Gideros Android App to the Blackberry Playbook

Hi folks,

in another community I participate in, I stumbled over this information about how to port your Android app to the Playbook.

https://bdsc.webapps.blackberry.com/android/tool/

When I see how less games are available on

http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/featured/category/1?lang=en&prodType=2

then I think there could be a buck or two to be made.

Cheers
Michael

  • Ok, there are more game I saw now, but still... another market is always good! Thanks to the open compiling process of Gideros, I am sure this market can be served!

RIM's really trying to push hard there, by enabling unmodified Android applications run on their platform. They poured in USD400M in playbook but didnt succeed. Their sales number is always decreasing and there's no real appstore ecosystem and economy for BB devices. I've experienced the appworld submission process before and it was something I do not want to dive in (for a BB app).

I'm now checking the links you provided. The first link crashed my Chrome, and after trying with IE several times, it froze my IE. I'll check again with other modern browsers, but if this is happening to me, many other devs will face the same bad experience again. Unfortunately another negative impression :(

While I believe RIM still has to go a lot further to fire up their developer ecosystem, I'll try again whether it can be a viable platform for Gideros Studio. However I'm in doubt there as underlying QNX OS for Playbook does not support NDK. @atilim any hints here maybe - what happens if NDK is not supported on QNX.

RIM says that you dont have to be the owner of the app to be ported to BB Playbook. If someone can confirm this using the link above with an example Gideros Studio application, that would be great as I was unsatisfactory.

    Thanks for the heads up.

PS: See here a list of Android apps ported to BB Playbook: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgxpYlYAxOVMdEJRZkZaa0ZrQzVEQjVMVmNFNGV1Z0E&hl=en_US#gid=0
  • Ahh, ok. I didn't thought about the NDK may not be supported by the Playbook. No problem. thanks for the info! So people, forget about all this. My bad!

Well after reading my paragraphs, I think I've been a bit harsh about RIM & Playbook - well I'll check again to see if I can use their service, and install a few Gideros Studio examples on my Playbook ;)
