Mavericks and Parallels 7 do not work

Contrary to all the assurances offered about Mavericks being compatible with most apps, especially Parallels, it does not start a VM saying that it does not have the relevant drivers, there are some work arounds if you are using 8, but that's that. I had purchased Parallels 6, then upgraded to 7 so it was unfair that I Parallels keep charging.

For those that feel this is justified, here's a parallel (and my rant for this week), Microsoft killed Visual Basic almost instantaneously to make way for their DotNet framework. If I recollect it right, it was nearly a decade ago that dotNet was released, it replaced theVisual Basic and gave access to the system and reduced the number of lines of code one had to write with VB. However today, after 10+ years, VB apps are still runnable on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 where as the dotNet 1.0 framework apps would not. So, back to how is it related, the upgrades offered by tParallels or VMWare are basically service packs or updates and paying the same amount over is (in the long term an expensive proposition) I purchased VMFusion 1.0 (2007), upgraded to 2.0, then purchased 4.0, upgraded to 5.0 but the laptop that I used Fusion 1.0 on is now being decommissioned, so why does one have to buy the same app 5 times over in about 5 years, so the cost of the app is not what is published, but the formula cost + (cost * (timeyears * .5)) assuming that the upgrade costs remain at half the costs.

Similarly I had ScreenFlow 3.0 and had to buy the new version of ScreenFlow 4.0, and many other apps (not because of upgrading to Mavericks) This is like a Freemium app, the only difference is that you pay a premium also at the time of purchase.

  • The Parallels upgrade fees are annoying. Basically full price (if you shop around) every year for a small update. Luckily for me, P8 is running Windows 8.1 on Mavericks without any problems.

I think doing away with upgrades is a newer trend in boxed software, but in order for it to work you need to lower your price point and be up front about the process. I think the Parallels team is trying to have it both ways. Given that it's been two years since 7 was released it's probably reasonable to not support newer OSs. If I remove emotion from my thinking it's still a good value at $50/year given what it provides me and what the alternatives are. I mean if I didn't own P8 today, I really wouldn't think much about buying P9.

I also don't like Parallels' approach to marketing. Their upgrade emails implied I would have issues if I didn't upgrade and their big Black Friday deal is getting a bundle for $79.99 that includes P9 plus seven other applications I don't want and would never use. But I save $356.85! I really prefer companies that are straight forward.

Is that Black Friday deal current? I got most of my software (Bundles) from MacUpdate, MacHeist, etc type bundle sales and many a times I got other softwares (that I don't use as a bonus)

Any links to that Back Friday deal if it is current and still valid?
