  The actual threads to read are here and here where @atilim says he is working on OpenGLES 2.0 and render to texture will be implemented in that major release.
  
  You could speed up your text rendering by using meshes instead of sprites. It would mean you have to write your own TextField / TextArea implementation to use meshes but it should be a lot faster than past implementations (unless of course the current implementation uses meshes in which case ignore this paragraph).

  Unfortunately @talis that would be my head. I just seem to retain the salient points from threads I've found interesting or that I've posted in and then ask our friend Google to find them for me. I explained in this thread how to use Google more effectly to search the forums. Maybe @ar2rsawseen could make a thread which takes the most common queries and links to the 2 or 3 most replied to threads for each subject.
