If you had all the resources at your disposal, what kind of game would you be working on?

Hi community,

I just spent three hours fighting with a bug in my app and I'm taking a break (just after experiencing an earthquake while coming back home, in the train.)

I was wondering :
  1. if you had all the resources at your disposal (time, money, coffee) and if making a profit from those games were not a necessity
  2. if you could create whatever you want without, again, having to worry about getting any revenue from that activity
What kind of game would you be working on?
What would be your dream app/ game?

  • I would be living in Utopia then, wouldn't I? Work on whatever I want and no worries about revenues...

    I wouldn't be making an app then, I would be making an ecosystem, a platform like iOS or Android and of course with a very talented team of people.

    yep, the "no limit" is to get rid of real resource limitations but also false assumptions about what can and what can not be achieved.
    An ecosystem, interesting. From scratch? I thought it was also an option to improve and iterate from the good parts that others have already created/developed and shared.
    Or maybe your goal with it would be the level of quality control and total ownership?

    For me too : working with a very talented team of people would be part of my priorities.

  • @Mells I would probably dive in into Augmented Reality apps, they might be gaining popularity, but for now I think they are not profitable enough, but would be very interesting to make ones. Lot's of research and real life experiments needed, which or course needs too much resources.

    Couple of ideas would be the real time battery efficient position tracking, AR games as platformers that use real world terrains (as houses in the city), or for example drawing 3D models in the air, etc.
    Lot's of ideas that I would like to experiment on if I'd have resources. :)
  • @Mells, My original answer might have come across as re-inventing the wheel. Let me try to re-phrase that, when I say eco-system, I mean a new unified way of doing things, currently what we have is a whole lot of variants on the same, so a platform that would help developers to work on their idea rather than to have to bother about frameworks, cross platform, resolutions, etc. It might sound like what Microsoft intended with dotNet. A unified file system that would take any form of data and work with it, rapid graphical interfaces for easy access to data, automatic file and symantec data association including self describing datasets that would visualise and analyse data automatically and fast, providing information than just data. Customizable UI's with on the fly language changes, without having to explicitly create the same. Graphics (like voxels) that can be manipulated in 3D, so not only can you animate the sprites but also view them from a 3D angle, etc. That's why I call it an eco-system.

    While in my role as an academic, I have seen that the boundaries for many a research or ideas with students remain limited due to many of these factors, there are just one or two bright sparks that can think outside of what's there. If we can increase the limits of the box, remove the impediments, it can help grow it better. There can be a lot of real-time stuff that we can only imagine in movies or fiction.

    As for your question on ownership and closed-source, if finance was hardly an issue, then this would not be my bread and butter, coz I'd have that anyways ;) So there would hardly be an issue of ownership or control.

    Though it seems like re-modelling a house, it has to be torn down to the ground because it is the foundation needs the changes, not just the house plan.

    If it comes down to choosing just an app that I would like to work on. Let me pull out my time machine and let you know in a bit ;)

  • @Mells - personally I'd be looking at some adventure games with lot's of procedurally generated content. I'd love to do something Zelda like but with greater depth for the characters, I love the idea of creating and nurturing a character through his life, the games / levels / adventures that you play would tell the characters life story and fill in a kind of autobiography as they go along, something you could go back and read / experience again after the character has "retired" from active service (or eventually died).

    Failing that I love the idea of coding games, something were you have to help "create" the "AI" for the main character by writing (or dragging and dropping) code blocks, or maybe creating an app that would allow people (especially beginners) to create art from code (bit like Scratch).

    Like I said - so many ideas, so little time :)

    :) Nice question. I just read it on my break, so here it goes...

    I am a big fan of adventure games like @techdojo. I would like to create
    * characters to identify with
    * A strong story background.
    * Puzzle solving and deduction.
    * Also, turn based combat and detailed char/skill set

    I think I am describing something between final fantasy X and Full throttle games. I wish there were more games like that.

    I had started to brainstorm ideas to use AR for art installations.
    I made a few things, but sadly I never got the time to invest in more ambitious projects.
    Also, it seems that all solution providers required the client to install a different "viewer" (which made the market fragmented and got people confused).
    Maybe things have changed since then. Do you still need to install a proprietary app to enjoy AR? Are some Android models equipped with an unified AR viewer?
    (I use the word viewer because I don't know the real one).

    @OZapps I got your point, and I agree on many things.

    Well what I meant total ownership and control over the level of quality it was more about the fact that in a closed system, if you can get talented people with you and also "sometimes" open the door to get the best ideas from outside, you get something that can be profitable outside of the financial aspect.
    You control the ship and if you have a vision + resources, you get all the chances to make it a reality. Sometimes unlimited resources can't help if you share ownership with somebody and the person is more interested in his parts than in the money or anything else you can offer to buy it.
    That is what I had in mind.

    What you describe needs resources but the scale is not something out of reach, it seems.
    What might make it unreachable and make your budget explode could be the level of graphics that you expect, but we have seen games of that level done with restricted budget.
    My point is : you might need more money to make it happen, but you don't need my unlimited resources offer to achieve it in the future ;)

    @Mells, no nothing unified yet, developing unified framework would also be one of the goals. :)

    Also like @deniz idea, would also want to try to develop some huge adventure RPG with crazy storyline and make it an icon of new mobile RPG epoch, something like Final Fantasy was. :)

    @mells : I am not planning to:)

    I was just saying, if I decide to make a game one day, and I have huge resources, I would want to create something like ffx.

    I am very happy to make Gideros and help others create games. (and really wish some of them to be adventure games... )

  • I also want to make a 'classic' point'n'click adventure at some point, it may be halfway between a real plan and a dream. in any case it seems that many people are interested in adventure games. it would be good to have a gideros implementation for the main tools needed to develop such a game. one possible solution would be to make a port of http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ as it is already a quite well-thought and capable adventure game maker tool and it is open-source since a while. by a port i mean some way to convert an ags project to a gideros project.
    that would be awesome as currently mobile export of ags games is quite limited. also some expansion to add bigger/variable resolutions would be necessary for mobile development. it is way beyond my knowledge to make such a port but definitely would like it if somebody could do one.
    what do you think?
  • Many seem to want to make an Adventure Game, namely Point and Click variety, what theme/genre would appeal to you? Zombies, Pirates, Ninjas, Birds, Lost and Horror, Comedy, Generic, etc?

    Something SciPhy I guess, some wehere on another planet or in another parallel dimension, or something futuristic.
  • Well, i have a quite specific idea, it has elements of scifi yet it is rather just a tool for the story to develop. let's call the genre contemplative drama, the most cliche element would be that it is set on an island. i wouldn't want to say more for now. anyhow, the best adventure games are never in a genre, or they set their own (e.g. the lucas games monkey island, day of the tenctacle, grim fandango).
